Where Is Ypsipyli Hiding?
The cultural education programme "Where is Ypsipyli hiding?" is an inspiration of Places & Traces and it is held in collaboration with the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Lemnos.
The programme is designed with a view to inviting all residents and visitors of Lemnos to participate in a journey of knowledge so as to discover various “stories” of the island. During this journey, Ypsipyli, mythical Queen of Lemnos, is our guide. According to legend, Ypsipyli was forced to leave the island, and now, she is trying to return to her homeplace and era, while travelling in time, meeting historical and mythical figures, and discovering the old and the modern face of the island. A number of elementary, junior high-school and high-school students are Ypsipyli’s fellow travellers and assistants in this project. They have the opportunity to learn more about emblematic buildings and points of interest in Lemnos and bring to the fore the contemporary identity of the island, using multiple means of expression.
Chapter ΙΙ focuses on the Byzantine/Post-Byzantine and Ottoman period and it is being implemented during the 2022-2023 school year. A large number of students of the Junior High Schools of Myrina, Livadochori and Moudros, the High Schools of Myrina and Moudros, the Laboratory of Special Professional Education and Training in Repanidi, the Primary School of N.Koutali and the 3rd Primary School of Myrina participate in the second chapter of the programme. Apart from various educational visits to important buildings and points of interests, emphasis is placed on the natural environment of Lemnos, the local products and their producers as well as several initiatives dealing with their promotion. Students will also become familiar with digital tools and some basic principles of artistic photography so as to create alternative “narratives” of their experience in the programme. Chapter II was co-financed by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports.
Chapter ΙΙΙ is to be carried out during the 2023-2024 school year. It will focus on antiquity and prehistoric times, and students will familiarize with multiple means of expression, such as creative writing, drama and dance.
