Our History

The Lyceum Club of Greek Women was founded in 1911 by Callirrhoe Siganou-Parren, one of the pioneers of the Women’s Rights Movement in Greece. Its main goal is the preservation of Greek traditions as well as the rise and self-growth of Greek women.

The Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Lemnos was established in 1991 and its primary concern is the preservation and spreading of Greek customs and traditions, and especially, of the local Lemnian culture. Additionally, it focuses on women’s and children’s moral support, gender equality, the value of volunteering and social solidarity, the preservation and promotion of the Greek language and culture.

It maintains strong ties with the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Athens and with all the other branches and bureaus in Greece and abroad, contributing to the promotion of our cultural heritage nationwide and worldwide. It is a nonprofit organization, whose activities are mainly supported by its members.

Over the years, the Lyceum Club of Greek Women of Lemnos has offered a wide range of cultural and educational activities and has created and maintained a rather rich collection of traditional Greek costumes, photos and books. It has participated in numerous cultural festivals in Greece and abroad and has had a strong presence in the social and cultural activities on the island for years.

In a recognition of the Lyceum Club’s contribution to the local society, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) made a substantial donation in 2018 so as to support our activities and modernize our equipment.
